Meursault
Caol
Eagle & Serpent Recordings ESR-004
CD-R
£7.99
Long-awaited return from Shaun Falconer’s solo guitar/dreamtone project after, what, a few years? The last Meursault disc was awash in minimal synth styles and extended avant electronics but Caol brings it back to the guitar, with elegiac instrumentals built around single notes floating endlessly in space, vibrating with little coronas of F/X in a way that brings to mind Loren Connors’ desolate late-night string poetics or even early Taku Sugimoto. The melodies are simply, hymnal while the atmosphere is deep and extremely heavy. This is more about solo guitar playing than loops or trickery and it feels all the more powerful for it. Packaged in the usual high-class plastic sleeves with original photography. Recommended.

Meursault
By Lamplight
Eagle & Serpent Recordings ESR-002
CD-R
£7.99
New second edition. Second CD on this new Glasgow-based label, with stunning hard card fold-out packaging with full-colour photography and stamped credits. Meursault is the solo guise of Mr Shaun Falconer, a do-er that has dunk deep in the back catalogue of Keiji Haino, Loren Mazzacane, Hisato Higuchi and maybe even Christoph Heemann and William Basinski and come up with a beautifully personal take on avant guitar forms, elegiac slow-mo poetry and the sound of light-dissolved drones that glide to earth with alla the grace of a storm of cherry blossoms. Very affecting, heavy with a sense of place and time and one of the best discs to come out of Scotland since, well, uh.... Recommended.
