TIP OF THE TONGUE 19 MAY 2013
Vikki Jackman, Andrew Chalk & Jean-Noel Rebilly
A Paper Doll’s Whisper Of Spring
Faraway Press FP-022
Beautiful limited vinyl edition of what was originally a micro press CD-R released in 2012: this edition of only 400 copies is completely re-mastered by Denis Blackman and pressed on 140g vinyl with DMM cut and printed sleeves featuring a Japanese obi strip. Jackman plays electric piano and electronics while Chalk plays synth and Rebilly plays clarinet. The mood is of melancholy memorial refracted through hazy, hallucinatory slow-motion synth environs, with aching half-heard melodies dissolving into shimmering tonal sunsets. There is slightly more of a ‘group’ feel than on previous Chalk releases, a little more interactive but still completely out of focus, with evocatively displaced synth melodies rising from heavens of reverb and tape F/X and it captures the feel of similar ‘reverse’ workings like the Two Daughters releases, the first Deux Filles, Asmus Tietchens early recordings, the classic Mirror sides... while still remaining specifically centred on the Jackman/Chalk soundworld. No one makes such gently euphoric and emotionally affecting drone work outside of Jackman and Chalk and this is another peerless set that combines a stately, elegiac proto-classical grace with spare DIY instrumentation and alchemical processing techniques. Very highly recommended!
