Stunning high energy free jazz/psych set from a massive big band led by saxophonist Peter Brotzmann that features Keiji Haino on vocals and electric guitar, Marino Pliakas on electric bass, Michael Wertmuller on drums, Peter Evans on trumpet and Mars Williams on alto and tenor saxophone. The two sides showcase two individually explosive approaches to instant form, with the A side dominated by an hysterical post-Ayler wailing/weeping religious brass sound that takes the ecstasy of the Ghosts/ESP-Disk sound and streamlines it with a massively heavy electric backbone. Electric basses regularly set off alarm bells in free jazz - blame Bill Laswell – but there are none of the mating calls of airbrushed whales here, with Pliakas riding a stream of pure amplified sound while Brotzmann is at his most wounded and unchecked. The flip is dominated by Haino, with three tracks that document three very different strategies. The first is pure Fushitsusha, with Haino cranking the fuzz guitar over fast harvesting rhythms. The second is a more abstract vocal/noise piece with gruff textural saxophone exchanges and lung-scraping vocals that touch on the more Industrial Borbetomagus sides while the final piece features some dazzling inventive clean guitar with fantastic overlapping rhythms and odd repeating melodic fragments. Everything Last Exit could have been? Either way, this is a monster. 180g vinyl. Highly recommended.
